Platinum/Palladium

Platinum/palladium printing appeals to me as much for the experience of making the print as for the finished photograph. Unlike a conventional photographic paper, the process begins with mixing the chemistry and hand-coating a sheet of fine art paper. Each print is made individually, and the physical involvement in creating it brings a connection to the finished photograph that I find especially rewarding.

The beauty of a platinum/palladium print is equally distinctive. The image is formed within the fibers of the paper rather than sitting on its surface, producing a remarkable sense of depth and a long, subtle range of midtones with exceptionally smooth transitions from light to dark. Combined with the permanence of the platinum and palladium metals and the tactile quality of the paper itself, the result is a photograph that is as much a handmade object as it is an image.
